Milo

Just a little town with 2 main routes of entry, Dover-Foxcroft or Lagrange. I recommend Lagrange and all it curves and smooth 55mph capable highway. Not the downtown Mogadishu Moonscape of craters from Dexter/ Dover-Foxcroft or the cow shit covered roads of the rest of the area.

The Penquis Cruisers are gracious hosts and put on a great time and this year was no exception. Over 200 cars and trucks came to the lot of choice in Milo and had a sun filled day, no rain or even a hint of it for the first time in 3 years that I know of. Music as a backdrop, not in your face senseless prattle and announcements on the hour only.

They auctioned off some local gift certificates, donated new and used auto parts, tools, dozens of whoopie pies and about 15lbs of Homemade Fudge. Talk about tooth decay.

Awards are simple and few with Longest Distance, Hard Luck, Best Project and the Spectators Choice. All of this and a "thank you for coming" as we packed up or "see you next year" as we drove out the gate.

Another good day

Fast Forward and Take a Hard Left

I was told today that I needed to post something on here. So here goes.

Last week my shining personality played a part in the Hodgman's Show. It came to pass that some Trophy Poachers thought they could change class. Wrong.

It has been a policy of the Knucklebusteres since 1999 that once assigned a class that is where you stay. As the Knucklebusteres were a little short on members, the Road Scholars were asked to lend a hand. It came to pass that I was asked to handle the Situation and I did. They got their money back and left, with burning ears and bruised ego's. The only mistake I made was a poor choice in language and for that I will apologize to all that heard said profanity except the 3 Gentleman (loose translation) that it was aimed at.

Enough Said.

Today I went to Steel's Real Rods & Customs for the little gathering they had. What sweet location on RT.1 and a good turnout it was, with 50 or so cars and trucks. They do this every Wednesday evening and cook some great burgers or so I'm told. The owner decided he didn't want to cook today. But on the 10th of July (Saturday) starting at 10am he will be having a Car Show and Street Dance with awards in 3 Classes, Music, Free Admission And Free Passes to Wiscasset Speedway for Sunday's Burnout Contest. All the details are on the Road Scholars Site at http://roadscholars.webs.com

Tomorrow is the 21st edition of the Penquis Cruise In. Put on by a fine bunch of Cruisers who really get it right year after year. The hustling bustling Metropolis of Milo ME plays host to this Cruise In every year and thoroughly embraces the day.

Anyway I'll be there and not Harrison so let me know how that was for you. I'll let you know how my day was. Today was Cool.

Till Next

Updates and More Crap

So this weekend we have a choice of several little things that could prove to be a fun weekend and by little things I mean a Cruise In, a Day Long Cruise In or a Car Show.

Got word of a small little Gathering at Steels Real in Warren from 11 to 2 or there abouts. It is Not a show, but a get together at a real cool shop that supports the hobby. No drama, no Bullshit and no awards. Just Fun.

On Sunday we have our weekly allotment of Plastic Tubes, Faux Marble and Glittery Shit over at the Harrison Car Show at Crystal Lake Park. I really can't say much about this show as I have never been to it, and again this year I will be elsewhere. So keep me apprised of any glowing reviews or scathing remarks.

Where I will be, is the Penquis Cruise In in Milo, ME. They usually draw a good crowd from the northern end of the state and have a fun day planned with an actual auction, homemade trophies for the 4 or 5 awards they give out and a $3.00 entry fee. I will be there in my capacity as NSRA Safety Inspector with the boys from the Northern Division making sure that the vehicles are safe.

Now before I forget there is also a Cruise. Called the Tidally Fun Run. It is being put together by members of the Uptown Kruizah's and leaves from several locations heading to points east, including Fat Boy's, Bailey's Island with the final destination of Bowdoinham for the Monthly, Cruise In on the Cathance, which is a Cruise In sponsored by the town. You can get all the details at http://roadscholars.webs.com/ on the Calendar Page.

Weekend Report

First let just say it was a good weekend for all the events that went off this weekend.

I owe an apology to Cheryl and Stan for not promoting their event more and insinuating that they had "$15.00 Cheap Ass Trophies" that was not my intent. It is an opinion on trophies in general which has been stated here, time and again. Again I am truly sorry for upsetting two great people who have busted their butts to put together some quality events in the past and hopefully in the future.

I have heard great things about the Windham Show both from the winners and those that received nothing but admiration. Good Job Guys.

Fryeburg was a Hotbed of activity with 100 or more Street Rods in Attendance and a relaxing atmosphere of friends and camaraderie. Inspections were plentiful and many unexpected flaws were found and repairs made on site for a safe journey home for all.

Sanford was a reunion of sorts, with some old Drag Race heroes being found on site and a replica of the old tower being built by an area club. Rumor has it this may become the theme of the Sanford Show in the near future with a Reunion atmosphere rather than a Show .

Now as for today, Hodgman's was Hodgman's and the Fathers Day tradition continued. The field was almost full and everybody seemed to be having a great time. The Knucklebusters pulled together an eclectic group on Car Clubs and Enthusiasts to get the crew of participants to their proper places. The new Split Balloting system was complimented by many and seemed to improve the timetable for awards. Big Mike was doing a great Job at the gate Classing cars and should be a fixture in that capacity in the future.

To Team 207, you guys were the best, for parking cars and keeping things straight on the field and asking advice on how to keep it straight. Even the much maligned Road Scholars were an effective group in putting out the little problems before they became large ones. The Uptown Kruizah's as always were there to pick up the slack where ever it was needed. To all, Great Effort and Good Job.

Today, no let's rephrase that, This weekend Was great.

Sunday Tradition

The next time you think of Father's Day, think Car Show. As it has been the norm for way to many years to count the Hodgman's Frozen Custard Car Show held on Father's Day is an Institution.

This Show hosted by the Knucklebuster Motor Club with the help of many other clubs and of course Ken and Joyce Hodgman has over the years developed a following of great Cars and Trucks. Even the lousy weather of years past can not deter the participants from getting to the Show.

The Sponsors that this Show has had over the years is a who's who of Business Owners most of which in some way still support the show and this year is no different with the Wal-Mart of Auburn stepping forward to get the Trophies done and helping with the food. As is a tradition the Money from the Show goes to Charity and this years choice is of course the Children's Miracle Network.

Over the years I have been on that field way to long and many times I was wet from head to toe. The one constant was the smile on my face and at some point during the day, my Dad. The tradition continues as I will be there again, so will my dad.

6/17/10

Saturday

Yes I know about the Car Show in Windham on Saturday. But in case anybody is tired of the usual Car Show Format, there is an Alternative.

This Year is the 25th Annual Rod Run at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds hosted by Rods & Kustom Kruizers. Now you have to Understand that a Rod Run does not involve any $15.00 Cheap Ass Trophies. This one does involve seeing old friends all weekend. Having a camper is almost required but some manage to have a good time without it. It is going on as I write this and ends on Sunday.

An Ice cream Cruise is Scheduled for Friday, NSRA Inspections from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, kids games for the youngest Rodders go on Saturday Afternoon, a pot luck supper on Saturday Night with a Street Dance with a live band into the wee hours of the night.

Western Maine Street Rods are doing the Happy Days Diner with Hotdogs in great abundance for Saturday's lunch and Adult Beverages are Allowed all weekend.

So if you need the Trophy go to Windham, If you need to relax and say "ahhh" come to Fryeburg

Bridgton

It was fun, and surprisingly peaceful on the Peak today and a good time was had by all with few exceptions. Congrats to the Crew that put this on and decided that Composite Body Street Rods belonged in Street Rods and not in Kit/ Reproductions.

The Moal's are a good outfit and have done an admirable job in turning this show into the potential good show of the Month with some great food and a timetable that beat many shows by hours.

There was however one incident that was witnessed by several people including myself. This incident did not detract from the show itself, but the way it was handled could have led to a much more adverse scenario had it been done to someone with a less temperate personality.

The incident mentioned was a member of the Moal's berating a participant about his vehicle. The vehicle in question was a Mopar Product in the Mopar Class and that should have been good enough. The vehicle was a potential 3rd or 4th place car and in a 5 or 6 car class it should have been just that. The owner was questioned in such a way, that it seemed like an example of a 21st Century Spanish Inquisition about the fact that the vehicle was a Road Runner Clone and needed to be labeled as such. The attitude of the Volunteer Showed a disregard for decorum or the feelings of the participant. The participant was virtually forced to change his placard which could be compared to being forced to drop your pants in front of a large crowd.

This could have been handled better and should have been, but I will not hold it against the Moal's or its leadership. It only showed that one member had the people skills found in Kindergarten Class. It should also be noted that the Member of Moal in Question, was also an entrant with a Mopar Product in the Mopar Class.

A Good Day all in all.

Winterport Report

Got this in from one of our intrepid readers/reporter on the happenings up at the Winterport Show.

"WONDERFUL day today even after getting of to a late start due to a slack tire! Up the Pike, off at Exit 174 and we were there in about 2 an a quarter hours. Hosts were very gracious. Judged show with two places per class. Judges looked and made sure they looked at every vehicle even if they had to come back later on. Only draw back was there was nobody classing the vehicles as they drove in so there was Mopars not in the Mopar class and Mustangs, Camaros etc., but didn't bother us nor did it seem to anyone else. Food was good and not expensive, drags happening all day long. Met some new folks, some old friends not seen since last year and most of all had a wonderful time and got home dry! ONLY DOWN SIDE - I didn't smell any salt air. Will we go again? ABSOLUTELY, but will leave early enough to stop a time or two on the way - long ride but well worth it - thanks Bobby for the recomendation"

Thanks Deb

S M T W T F

So Sunday was wet, as you know. Monday was just plain gorgeous and Oxford was just plain great. The Uptown Kruizah's have hit it on the head with a very large hammer and now have a Cruise Night to show up at, on a regular basis. Great Food Great People and the New location is the cat's ass for sure.

Then Tuesday shows up and does the same as Monday with the CHOP crew out in Force and election results in La La land. Mother Nature made a Statement with a wet dream at 40mph that dampened the cars but not the spirits. and things continued on well after the appointed hour of termination and we really didn't care.

Hump Day was the Creme de la Creme of events with the once a year Gearhead Gathering in Monmouth with well over 150 cars and trucks of every genre being at ease within the confines of the area. But let me tell you, get them outside the confines and it was let it rip with enthusiasm and joy in your heart. The local Constable was kept busy being a prick and we were busy being ourselves.

Today was another wet crap day but the event I tried to get going on a drenched Sunday went off on a Damp Wednesday and more fun with good people. When the determining factor is attitude the weather just doesn't matter.

Friday promises to be a better day weather wise. A new Cruise Night in New Auburn Promises to be a rerun of Tuesday nights at Roy's with the Dancing Dipstick and his ever charming partner the Aflac Duck, but I digress. Friday will be another fun Cruise no matter the entertainment factor or comedic relief .

Saturday is a down time day as the Pontiac has yet to be cleaned from the Rain of Sunday, Tuesday or today. Winterport will have to wait and Bridgton is Sunday. To those that plan on attending the Kohl's Show have fun and tell them their classes are not quite right. Besides I had a great time last year at Shawnee Peak and plan on making it a good day this year.

6/7/10

Kohl's or Bridgton

Where are you going, Bridgton to Shawnee Peak or Auburn to Kohl's. We have a Choice and we should have fun at either. Classes will be my determining factor, so I've carefully looked them over and will figured out where I'm Going later.

Here is a link to Team 207 for info on the Kohl's/APD Explorer's Show: http://www.tuningonabudget.com/Forum/index.php?/topic/75-auburn-apd-explorer-car-show-stereo-show-june-13th/page__pid__853__st__0&#entry853

Let us know your thoughts and where you are going.

Wet

Rain in Drops, Drams and Buckets.

Receiving a Call to watch the radar was as appropriate as asking for a dry towel. It Showed some nastiness in the weather patterns that should have deterred me from adventuring any further than the driveway. The nastiness started at our destination and went clear to New York

I don't deter easily or I just don't take advice well. Off to Rumford it was at which point we decided that having a NSRA Appreciation Day was not the best idea and reworking the schedule was a more attractive concept. We packed up and beat a path to the McDonald's up the street and took it over for the next 3 hours telling tall tales and laughing loud enough to make people wonder what we were doing.

The NSRA Appreciation Day that was attempted today has been put into a rain delay and will be replayed later as an Abbreviated version and will be happening on Thursday June 10th, at the Advance Auto Parts Store in Mexico, Maine. This also happens to be the monthly Cruise Night in the area. My apologies to anyone that was disappointed by our last minute decision.

Now that I've dried out, it still was a good day!

6/5/10

Update

Pleasant Mountain / Bridgton Car Show Postponed to Sunday, June 13th. Same time and location.

6/4/10

Weekend

Well we have miserable weather in the forecast , but that never stopped anybody from supporting a car show or two.

We have the little tiny West Paris Parade and Show with 3 classes on Saturday. As I said before there are not alot of details on this one. But they usually have a BBQ going at the same time, so rain or not you can always eat.

Saturday Night in Biddeford at 5 Points Shopping Center, is the first installment of the Maine Coastal Cruisers Cruise-In's, with enough forethought to establish a rain date for next weekend.
You may want to call ahead on this one as the weather plays a part in this one.

Then on Sunday with the Weather predicting Showers off and on, you have a choice of 2 things going on, with a Show or an Appreciation Day.

We have the 4th Annual Shawnee Peak/ Pleasant Mountain Chapter-MOAL ( Maine Obsolete Auto League) in Bridgton. We all had a great time here last year and it promises to be just as busy and fun this year. It did have a problem with multiple Ballots being given to owners in the past but I have it on good Authority that it will not happen this year. I also understand they are using the Car Show Guide to fall back on when Classing vehicles. Good for them.

Where I will be on Sunday is Rumford. On Route 2 at the Marden's Plaza directly acrossed from Mickey D's for an NSRA Member Appreciation Day being Hosted by the Western Maine Street Rods. Although geared for members of the NSRA it is open to anybody wishing a Free Safety Inspection or Information about the NSRA and all its events. I encourage any and all enthusiast to come to this as it is Free Admission.

Could be fun and damp or just damp.

All Contact info can be found at the Road Scholars Site, http://roadscholars.webs.com/

Ugly Head Rising

Every once in awhile someone raises an issue that has been beaten like a red headed step child caught with its hand in the cookie jar. This is true of what is about to be written here and maybe some will disagree.

I get comments verbally and via E-mail all the time. I only talk about the things I'm familiar with or are comfortable in my knowledge of the Subject. I received a request from a fellow Street Rodder for the definition of Street Rod in the State of Maine or any other organization including the NSRA. I wondered why he needed them, thinking that some Govt. Minion was giving him a hard time. The reason was the following answer to a request for clarification on a Class at an upcoming event. The request as written, "I NOTICED ONE OF YOUR CLASSES SAYS 'KITS/REPRODUCTION'. WHAT WOULD FALL UNDER THIS CATEGORY PLEASE?" With this response being forwarded to me. "Hi, After market cars & trucks to look something like it's original production. My definition is a plastic street rod, instead of the real steel."

The reason for the request was a rumor that was going around that composite bodied Street Rods were to be put in the "Kit/Reproduction" class which was verified by the response. This is not what I wanted to hear and really thought this Subject had been put to bed. His Definition? Not Correct.

By Law, in the State of Maine a Street Rod is Defined as ; Title 29A, General Information, Definitions, 76. Street rod. "Street rod" means a replica of or a modified antique auto manufactured prior to 1949 that complies with standards adopted by the Chief of the State Police.[ 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 (NEW); 1993, c. 683, Pt. B, §5 (AFF) .]

SEMA the Speciality Equipment Marketing Assoc., who has helped hobbyist in North America get the legislation needed to keep our Cars Safe from outside interference, defines it this way; (a) A "street rod" means a motor vehicle that:(1) Is a 1948 or older vehicle; or the vehicle was manufactured after1948 to resemble a vehicle manufactured before 1949; and(2) Has been altered from the manufacturer's original design; or has a body constructed from non-original materials.(b) The model year and the year of manufacture that are listed on the certificate of title of a street rod vehicle shall be the model year and year of manufacture that the body of such vehicle resembles.

The organizer who responded this way is also a Street Rodder, who in the past has been beaten in competition by several Composite Bodied Street Rods. This gentleman has displayed that petty jealousy and a $15.00 Cheap Ass Trophy can Ruin a Good Show and deter his fellow Street Rodders from enjoying his event. The definitions make no differentiation between Steel or Composite bodies. The same can be said for every major Organization that caters to Street Rods including the NSRA, Good Guys, KOA, and the ISCA who puts on the Auto-Rama/World of Wheels Series. Yet this little homespun Show thinks it knows better. I think not.

The bone of Contention with the whole story is whether a Composite Bodied Street Rod should be put in a Kit/Reproduction Class. My argument is this, a Kit Car comes from one Manufacturer with all the components included to complete the project. A Street Rod comes from several manufacturers with a list of extra parts being needed for completion of the project. Which in the end is completed to the owners tastes, not the exacting Standards put forth by the original designers.

The Second part of the argument is the production of the new Steel Kits in the versions of 33-34 Fords from S.A.R. or the World Famous Steel Brookville bodies and turn key cars. The 69-68 Camaro that comes in a crate, or the Newest kid on the Block with complete bodies of the 40 Ford. Most if not all of these are so precise in the steel Stamping that only Henry Ford or Harley Earl could tell if they were fakes.

Kit cars are produced for the gold chain swingers that can't afford to buy the real deal. They are built as replica's of the sports cars of old or the opulent status symbols of years gone by. Street Rods were a Blue collar beginning with a working mans touch. A replica/kit/reproduction is a Copy as close to the original as possible. Henry Ford never approved a 4 inch chop, zeed back half with a 6 inch channel or a "A" Body on Deuce rails.

Kit/Reproduction = Copy
Street Rod = Statement
