Couple of Tings

First let me say, that for absolutely no reason we had a good time today at Owl's Head Transportation Museum With a Gang of good friends and a lot full of cars. With some of us thats all it takes is a reason to have a good time, but everybody today didn't need a good reason. So we had a good time without some of you.

I did recieve an interesting Phone Call from an old Friend that hasn't been seen or heard from in a couple of years. He called me with a question on the criteria of the Custom Car plate in Maine.
I dutifully told him all about that and how it could benefit him in the future as it would lift the limited use label from his car and allow him to drive it more than allowed by law now. I then proceeded to ask him Why now after all these years of circumventing the rules of Antique Plates did he wish the information.

This is his story, he drives a brightly colored Dodge Dart that has a very nasty motor in it and a very performance oriented exhaust system. The car comes equipped with all the modifications needed to go racing or be crazy and drive it on the Street. As he was driving up the Hiway he was pulled over by a State Trooper who asked all the right questions, looked over the car in admiration and gave all the paperwork back to my buddy then politely told him to take the car home and remove the Antique Plates from the vehicle as it no longer fit the Criteria of an Antique Vehicle with all the performance modifications making no longer Stock.

It was only a matter of time before the Troopers started doing this. So take this as a warning to all that run Antique Plates on Street Rods and overly Modified Muscle Cars. Register it right or your gonna get picked for a lecture and next time the cop may not like the car.

This next weekend with Shawnee Peak and an NSRA Member Appreciation Day on Sunday will mean I'll need some reports from Shawnee Peak or not. More on that later.

Verify Your Stuff

How many people showed up at Naples last Saturday? Yeah that's what I thought, OK you can put your hands down.

Naples American Legion's Date is a prime example of a change that didn't make it to print. No fault of the publisher or the organizer. The publisher is told what to print and needs the info by a certain time or deadline in order to make the publication viable. It doesn't make sense to publish a book full of dates that have already happened.

The organizer is told they can hold the event at a certain place and date. they submit that to the publication, then weeks later are told they need to change the date or place. To late at the publishers to make the change. Word gets around but not to everybody and sure enough somebody shows up on the original date and gets pissed off at the wrong people.

Verifying the date, place and time is up to us. there are more resources out there that we can use to cross check the events we want to go to. If all else fails call the the contact number or visit the provided website when they have one available. Information is valuable and is a good tool that we all use, the problem is most of us still believe what we read and think that if it is written it is etched in stone. More like written in sand.

Verify your stuff, or not.

Memorial Day Doings

After looking at the Calendar at the Road Scholars Site, it appears that there aren't any shows of interest in Maine. Looking closer shows there is little to do in Maine.

However there Are Shows out of State, in New Hampshire there is the 19th Annual Rotary Show in Londonderry and the Nostalgia Drags and Car Show at New England Dragway in Epping. Be careful of the Londonderry show as it thinks a little highly of itself with the $15.00 day of show entry fee. The Dragway thing is hosted by Down East Street Rods and usually has a big turnout of Street Rods in the show area.

In our own State there are things to do but you need to look at things a little closer. Livermore Falls is having a history Night and Cruise In on Friday from 4pm to 8pm. I don't know much about it, but with enough people that go enmasse we could possibly own the town. Not much of a bargain even at the free price, but it could be more fun had on the cheap.

Something we did overlook was the beginning of the season of events at Owl's Head Transportation Museum, they do a weekly event from now until whenever. This museum allows any pre-1990 vehicle in for free to display on the Runway, free admission to the museum and a chance to view the great antique airplanes and motor vehicles they have on display. Unlike most museums they have been known to take the planes out for a fly now and then.

This weekend is a Memorial Day to all. Get out the old car or truck and participate. We can all smile about that, can't we.

Another Good Nite

So who didn't go to the Uptown Kruizah's Cruise Night.

It seemed like the entire Who's Who of Car Shows, Car Guys & Gals and Car Nutz came out on this Balmy evening and gathered at Tractor Supply in Oxford for the opening Uptown Cruisers Cruise Night.

Minimal Blabbering by the DJ and a crowd that the best Cruise Night would be proud of, with the usual good food and the now Infamous Chop Suey all added to the great time had by all.

May this be a trait for all the upcoming Cruise Nights

Well Done

Was It Good For You ???

This weekend couldn't have been better. Beautiful weather, that could have been no better even if someone had asked for better.

With a Customer Appreciation Day at the Advance Auto Parts in Auburn turning into a mini-cruise in in the afternoon it was a good day. Fun talk, times and people showed that it ain't about a trophy or award.

Other folks went to Loudon and found that being in a class and parking where you want does actually work if the organizers want it that way. From what I heard everybody was happy and got to do a lap or 2 on the track. Awesome!

Cheryl Page sent me this about Naples.

Just want to let you know I just got back from the show in Naples and I think it was a great show. The entire show was held on pavement as the Town of Naples owns the ball field now. They did a good job of keeping all the classes together, not to much overflow . With the amount of cars that come now a days it is hard to keep all the classes together unless you have a lot of room. I didn't hear any complaining all today which was great . That is all I have to say,
Cheryl Page

Well it sounds like they finally got it going in the right direction and I'm sorry I missed it.

Up in Orland at the NSRA Member Appreciation Day, they gathered together a group of rodders from Downeast Maine and Maritime Canada and had the Biggest turnout for an Appreciation Day in the History of Rodding in Maine.

So Was it Good For You???

Blowing My Own Horn

Just got back from Bugusta, spending time in front of a TV camera.

This is something that got set up by my good friend, Larry Lavallee, President of the Rusty Nuts Car Club, Master Organizer of Togus and All Around Fruit Loop. Evidently he gets to be a guest on Mainely Motorsports on a regular basis. Over the past few years he has threatened getting me on the show. Well he finally succeeded and today both he and I were guests on the Show.

He promoted the RNCC premiere event which has somehow become the States Car Enthusiast premiere event that we call the Togus Run. In My opinion that in itself should have preempted any report on Racing.

I talked about the NSRA Safety Program and its Free Safety Inspection and all the other propaganda that came to mind.

We had a great time and maybe we can do it again. Only Problem is, I don't get Time Warner local programming. So my moment in the light is for you to see and judge. I was told it airs tonite and the rest of the week repeats several times.

5/17/10

Musical Voices

You ever get a tune stuck in your head and it just seems to stay there, like for days.

This has nothing to do with that.

A few questions about upcoming events came up during conversations at Bonney Eagle. A few of these should be cured with a few of the Flyers spread out yesterday.

Naples is on the 23rd and not the 22nd as verified by there Flyer. Telstar is Nixed by the Chamber of Commerce, (Yeah they didn't read the Blog, they do now.). Yes the Road Scholars site is listing all of New England, next year perhaps the Planet.

Advance Auto Parts in Auburn is having a Customer Appreciation Day this Saturday,(22nd) and is hoping for some Car people participation. This was verified by me today. The Annual Gearhead Gathering is the 9th of June in Monmouth not the A/L Airport.

I will not be at Naples no matter what. After the fields condition, the awarding of a first place trophy to a car that didn't even register, the blatant ineptitude of the organizers and the finger pointing done in every direction but the right one, this show could happen in my Bathroom and I'd piss out a window instead.

Besides there is a NSRA Appreciation Day in Orland that I will be at no matter what.

Congratulations to all the Winners at Bonnie Eagle, Us, for spending the day with friends who on the most part are worth the cost of admission

Yup It Was Me

Yes I was at Bonnie Eagle today, yes I said I wouldn't be. But like the plans of mice and men they are just that, the plans of mice and men. After having a major change in plans the wife and I decided to get out of Dodge and we ended up at Bonnie Eagle.

Now on with the understatement of the week, It Was A ClusterFuck. As in past years the Show fell apart when the gates opened. The downhill slide after that was faster than the Winter Olympic Bobsled Run. I agree with all who said so.

The fact that they ran out of Room should tell you that a whole lot of people came and had an idea things might be different. When they found out different is a State of Mind rather than this years attempt at a car show, most all went with the Flow and had a great day.

All the people I spoke with were happy to be out with great weather and fantastic cars with old friends and really could give a rat's ass about any $15.00 Cheap Ass Trophies. Most did come with the idea of having fun, Anybody complaining did it amongst friends or voiced it to the Organizers, which is what should be done.

Overflow of Classes or not providing enough room for the classes, proved to make some rather interesting match ups in parking like the Citreon Sj in the the same class as G.I. Joe 30Cal. Jeep or the Mercury Montero (early 60's) between 2 Tuners. Thinking anything other than hilarious shows everybody that your a $15.00 Cheap Ass Trophy whore and need counseling.

Hundreds of Cars. Great weather. Fantastic people. All well worth the 5buck entry fee. Seeing many cars that never registered showed me that I am not alone in thinking that car shows are for fun and awards are secondary. The little Vendors area provided some stuff that wasn't stupidly priced and did allow me to snag a very nice Pepsi Sign.

The Bonnie Eagle Car Show sucked as a Car Show, but I had a great day with some fine cars and good people. Thanks for making it happen.

Bonney Eagle

I won't be at this year's event as there are other events that demand my attention and presence. I will however be looking for someone to send me any Dates for car shows in the area. Just make list and if I don't already have it I'll Contact you for details.

If someone wants to report on the show itself I'll post your writings on here rather than a comment. Keep it clean, no Name calling, be as truthful as possible.

From the looks of other communications from several groups it could get interesting. Some are not pleased with the promised changes and some are not pleased with the new parking map. Others are never pleased, and trying to do so is a futile gesture.

Bonney Eagle still reigns as the largest show in Maine. It still is a great show for seeing a miriad of Cars Trucks and Vehicles we only see at this Show. It is fantastic spot for information on the upcoming season.

Remember to have Fun, its only a Car Show. If you get a trophy great, if you don't it Ok, it ain't the end of life as you know it, again its only a car show.

NEWS FLASH

Well as you know the Rumor mill runs 24/7/365. After hearing about it from a few sources I sent an E-mail to the Bethel Chamber of Commerce to Confirm.

The Rumor was that the Telstar High School Show is Cancelled , as you can see with a capital C. As this Show has had its ups and downs with down being the normal direction of late it was not really a surprise. However this year almost looked a lot better than years past, as the Chamber of Commerce was the organizer.

Well for once the Rumor Mill was spitting out the Gospel as this is what was received from the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce just minutes ago.

Rumor is correct. Telstar is not holding a car show this year and we are not taking it over.

Perception

I've gotten some comments during several conversations with Car Show people about recent commentary made about Bonney Eagle. Some of the comments made have been agreed with, others have not. Anybody who has been doing Car Shows in Maine for more than a few years knows what Bonney Eagle once was. They also know it can be that again but needs the right leadership.

The core of the problem is everybody has what they think is a good idea. They work hard on their idea, they push and pull, yank and tug until their idea is put forth. A Committee runs with it for 4 years or until what they think is a better, idea comes along. Bonney eagle has no standing Committee to run the Show, it Changes as often as the Student body.

The first Bonney Eagle Car Show I went to was in 1992, which means that a couple of the "Tuners" were still shitting their pants or crawling around on the floor. They had 2500 cars on the Grounds and raised $50,000.00 in 1 day, to be put toward the Sports Complex you see today. The great thing about that, was the Participants got to enter their cars at no cost. Thats right, free admission to all participants.

After all the upgrades to the grounds the Show was forced to make some major changes and a new group of people were running things and the Show was moved to the Cumberland Fair Grounds. Bad weather, poor management and other things caused several years of complete or near complete disaster. Then they moved back to the School and I stopped going as Admission was charged to the paticipants.

To say that the Show is gone by the way side would be more than appropriate. To say it has been turned into a shadow of itself is correct. To say it has a lot to learn is not quite right in fact we can learn from its past on how to run a show, just as we can learn from its present day incarnation on how not to run a show.

I have been watching Bonney Eagle since 1992 and it never was a good Show for anything but getting Flyers for other Shows and seeing some great cars. To think otherwise is basically a delusion as the Participant vote system is in effect and we all know how that works.

Bonney Eagle, 31 years old but only bad for the last 10. Anybody that has been here for more than a few years would know that. If it is as bad as all that why bother going. I don't.

News Item

As you know, when the Car Show season Starts we here at this rag get going with a little more frequency. Sometimes people wish that we wouldn't, but most times we do in a good way. This is one of those times.

Evidently someone was at the Wells Show had a large Brain Storm and is now seeking help in forming a Cruise Night in Wells or Something of that nature. I received this info via Team 207 via Face Book which is rather odd in itself. The message is a little confusing and needs a little clarification.

This is nothing I wish to be involved in organizing, but I'm sure somebody knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a club with some one who can help.

I am reaching out to car enthusiasts in our community who may be interested in a great opportunity. The owner of the Wells Corner Plaza would like to invite a Classic Car Club (or something similar) to hold a regular car shows throughout July and August! His plaza is a perfect space for this because its right off Route 1 in Wells, its on open expansive lot with lots of main street frontage. I know you are already holding the Old Orchard Beach Classic Car Show which have been a staple in our community for many many years, but if you or anyone else you know is looking for an additional space to hold a similar show, please contact me via email or at 510-387-7410. We are based out of Kennebunk.

As you can see the E-Mail address was not included but at least they gave us a phone to call, but it makes me wonder on the 510 area code. Just passing it on, if anybody wants to pick it up and run with it.

Medomak

Looking forward to something for to long is sometimes a let down. Having looked forward to the 9th Annual Cruisin to Graduation Car Show at Medomak Valley High School for over a month was not a let down, it was just plain amazing.

Over 400 Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles and several odd conveyances of humanity were assembled in one place for several hours to celebrate the upcoming 2010 Car Show season. Medomak busted out big time and held their best show ever.

The gate was run with an iron fist, which more shows should make note of. The veteran car show goers that were chosen should get a pat on the back just for taking no shit from anybody. This was proven when a Patron who was told he would be in Mopars decided he would change to the 60's class found his number stricken from his card, the show records and let everybody know, a card was placed on his car to tell everyone not to vote for it.

A few surprises and some disappointments were on par with any car show that uses the participant vote system. All in all the Seniors and parents that put on this show can be proud of their accomplishments and should carry this on to the 10th year of Cruisin to Graduation.

I don't know who ordered the weather and the wonderful day that followed but that didn't hurt the great time that was had by all.

Insurance???

Got this in from Ken Matthews today, I haven't talked to him personally, but will as soon as the dust settles. Insurance Companies need to clean up their act. It shouldn't be a them or us situation, ever. Here is Ken's Note, I wouldn't wish this upon anybody.

From: Propane@maine.rr.comTo: Your2Cents@hagerty.comCC: ptwoodycrew@aol.com; exhaustfumes@live.comSubject: Roadside AassistanceDate: Sat, 1 May 2010 17:15:59 -0400
WHAT A JOKE 24 hour roadside assistance, does that mean i will hear from you within 24 hours of my call?????

I have been a Hagerty customer since 2006 my member ID is 719055. I am responsible for at least 12 of my fellow car enthusiast purchasing insurance from Hagerty. I have always spoken very highly of your company. Now I find myself in a situation that has me wondering where I will now insure my antique automobile.

Here is my story; Saturday May 1, 2010 at 6:47AM I called 1-800-922-4950 option #3 to request roadside assistance as my 1948 Chevrolet quit running on a somewhat busy Maine State Highway. I left a voice mail message(my mistake to begin with) requesting a flatbed hauler to remove my vehicle and transport it less then 5-miles back to my residence/garage so I could start the repairs. It is now 5:00PM Saturday May 1, 2010 and I still have not been contacted by anyone from Hagerty Roadside Assistance.

Don't worry though, I had the presence of mind to call a reputable towing company with a real person that answers the emergency line and I had a tow truck on scene in a flash and had my vehicle back in my garage @ 7:52 AM. Now that is service that I will gladly pay for as the need arises.

I don't need some fancy insurance company selling me something that does not work. Our absence at the car show today was noticed by many and I will not hesitate to tell them about the day I have had and my disappointments with Hagerty's roadside assistance program. I am sure someone will call me from Hagerty, like today though, I can't wait to see how long that takes.

Ken Matthews
